Obedience in Cults

An interesting book I skimmed over for a report in English was "The Riddle of the Amish Culture" by Donald B. Kraybill.

(Full book Link: http://books.google.com/books?id=VVRXZhHHOdMC&dq=the+riddle+of+the+amish+culture&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=ZDEES-bTAoHDlAfV8NXsAQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCAQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=&f=false )

Here's an excerpt: "The Amish believe that parents should be ready to punish disobedience, insist on obedience, allow no opposing replies, and realize that if orders are disobeyed once and no proper punishment given, disobedience is likely to come again. Parents are expected to make children understand that they must obey you. Retorts and challenges from children, sometimes considered amusing forms of self expression in mainstream culture, are not tolerated in Amish life... learning to yield at an early age is a crucial step in preparing a life of obedience."

Any thoughts on this?
